How to Help Your Child Settle into a New School After Moving to Diamond Bar, CA or a New City

Summer is almost over. Most households are now starting the process of getting ready for school. Depending on where you live you likely have one to four weeks before your children will have their first day of the upcoming school year. If you made a move this summer the impeding school year may be giving you and your children more anxiety than normal. Moving schools can be a tough experience for children and adults alike to deal with. There are definitely some things you can do to make the transition to a new school easier for everyone.

Talk to Your Child About Changing Schools

First you will want to talk to your child about any concerns that they may have about moving to a new school. When you sit down to have this conversation with them make sure that there are no outside distractions. You want your child to know that you are fully invested in the conversation and that they have your undivided attention. As they tell you about their concerns validate their feelings. Remember they are allowed to feel however they want about starting a new school. Reassure them that no matter how they feel about it that it is okay. When you know what your child is thinking about or struggling with you will better know how to help them through the experience.

At the end of the conversation you will want to let them know that you will be there with them through it all. When your child knows that they have your support they will have more confidence that they will make it through everything okay. Make sure that you check in with them regularly, especially for the first few weeks. If difficult situations arise help your child navigate through them.

Walk Campus Before School Starts

Before school starts you should check out the campus. Go onto the school website and see when the office is open. Call the office and ask if you and your child can come and see the campus. Many kids feel more at ease on the first day of school if they have at least walked around the campus prior to the first day of school. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that they have an event before school starts for this very purpose. Many elementary schools have some sort of Meet Your Teacher event before the first day of school.

Enroll Kids in Extracurricular Activities

When you call the office ask questions about extracurricular programs. You may also be able to find this information on the school website. Find some activities that your child will enjoy and see what you need to do to help them join in the program. If your child is in high school they frequently have summer athletic or student government activities that your child might be able to participate in.

Prepare for Child’s First Day of School

Do everything you can to help your child have a good first day of school. The night before school starts get your child to bed on time. Many children have a hard time sleeping the night before the first day of school regardless of whether they are starting at a new school or not. Tired children are not as likely to enjoy their first day of school. You will also want to make sure that they have a good breakfast before heading out the door for the first day.
