Summer is almost over. Most households are now starting the process of getting ready for school. Depending on where you live you likely have one to four weeks before your children will have their first day of the upcoming school year. Talk to Your Child About Changing Schools
First you will want to talk to your child about any concerns that they may have about moving to a new school. When you sit down to have this conversation with them make sure that there are no outside distractions. You want your child to know that you are fully invested in the conversation and that they have your undivided attention. As they tell you about their concerns validate their feelings. Remember they are allowed to feel however they want about starting a new school. Reassure them that no matter how they feel about it that it is okay. When you know what your child is thinking about or struggling with you will better know how to help them through the experience.
At the end of the conversation you will want to let them know that you will be there with them through it all. When your child knows that they have your support they will have more confidence that they will make it through everything okay. Make sure that you check in with them regularly, especially for the first few weeks. If difficult situations arise help your child navigate through them.

Do everything you can to help your child have a good first day of school. The night before school starts get your child to bed on time. Many children have a hard time sleeping the night before the first day of school regardless of whether they are starting at a new school or not. Tired children are not as likely to enjoy their first day of school. You will also want to make sure that they have a good breakfast before heading out the door for the first day.
